In the world we live in, it’s so difficult for things to NOT cross platforms on their way to you. Books, comics, television, movies, podcasts, there are so many ways and so many opportunities for greatness. While MANY of them are misses, many of them are also hits.
This list is the pinnacle list, to me, of comic book movies that have been made, with a few provisos. The first one being that I was only allowed one movie per “series”, ie the MCU or the DC Universe series (gee, I wonder if any of THOSE will make this list). The second proviso was a bit harder for me to do, but I hard stuck myself on no cartoons allowed. I love cartoons, but I felt that there we a lot less limitations with cartoons than there were with live action, so I stuck with live action. 3.) Comic Book before Movie.
So let’s dive in on this!
10.) I put 2000’s Sin City as number ten on my list. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I remember enjoying it a lot. The stories of Basin City were always fun ones, even the sequel wasn’t too bad, though a far cry from this one. A Frank Miller comic, we were given 3 great directors and a slew of amazing actors were brought together for this one, and it didn’t disappoint.
9.) SnowPiercer from 2013, starring Chris Evans alongside a myriad of actors, including Ed Harris and John Hurt, was based on a French Graphic novel of the same name. Kidding, it’s called… La Transperceneige - I legitimately had to look spell that 5 times. It’s a pseudo Animal Farm style movie about a train that perpetually travels the earth after a massive climate disaster destroyed anything liveable. It’s also directed by Bong Joon-ho, who gave us Parasite!
8.) A History of Violence was ALSO given to us in 2005, starring one of my favourite actors ever, Viggo Mortensen, fresh off his stint as Aragorn, son of Arathorn and you owe him your allegiance. It’s about a small town diner owner who saves his diner from being robbed by brutally murdering the robbers and, in becoming a hero, is found by his dark past. Great movie, with a really awkward scene between he and Maria Bello that I won’t talk about, but like… awkward. But great.
7.) In Marvel comics, we were given a super cool storyline where, my favourite hero, Logan, is in a different universe and is an old man. The comics title, you ask? Old Man Logan. Hard to get there, amirite? The comic did very well and, alongside another comic book series, the death of Wolverine, 2017’s Logan, starring Hugh Jackman, was birthed. It’s set slightly in the future after a few world altering things have happened, and is about a retired Logan giving it one last hurrah. Shout out to Boyd Holbrook, he plays one of the main thugs and he’s great.
6.) was one of the harder ones to keep out of my top five, if I’m being honest. Karl Urban is awesome, I really like Olivia Thirlby and it has Domnhall Gleason, my ginger brother and, it’s Dredd from 2012. A far cry from the 1995 Sylvester Stallone farce, this is an action movie about a cop who basically, fucks up some bad guys. And girls, he’s not sexiest that way. It’s based around this character working his way up a mega building to stop a drug dealer. Similar style to the 2011 Indonesian film, The Raid: Redemption
5.) Alright, here we go, top five. The Macho Man Randy Savage cream of the crop. The Aristocats crème de la crème de la Edgar of comic book movies. The…. Alright, I’m done with that. But what I’m NOT done with? My top ten, because I still have five to go. For five, I chose 2010’s Scott Pilgrim versus the world. A ridiculous romp through the exotic city of Toronto, Canada (woooooow), starring Michael Cera as the titular character and like 40 other people, all having, what looks like, a blast making this movie. ALSO has one of my dream women, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The comic was written by Bryan Lee O’Malley and the movie written by Edgar Wright. It’s very fun, though not everyone’s cup of tea.
4.) ALSO in 2010, we were given another very fun comic book movie, about a group of military … guys. A squad, or whatever it’s called, who get betrayed by the military and are claimed as dead, so they have to fight for their lives back. It stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Idris Elba, Zoey Saldana and Chris Evans, and it’s called the Losers. It’s very fun and worth watching every single time. You may not have even heard of it, but it’s awesome to me.
3.) For this one, we’re going way back to 2004, and another John Hurt movie, but this one starring Ron Perlman, before his Sons of Anarchy fame, as everyone’s favourite monster, Hellboy! I could easily have put the sequel on here as well, I love them both a lot, but this one gets the nod, because it’s a little bit darker to me, which goes with the comics a bit more. Guillermo Del Toro directed both and, full props, the man loves his practical effects, which make movies better. The costumes and props are SO MUCH better than computer produced effects.
2.) I can’t believe this movie was made in 2008, that means Heath Ledger died almost TWENTY years ago, which is insane to me. Christian Bale as The Dark Knight is a movie like no other and, easily, could have taken the top spot on this list. It’s written, directed and acted amazingly, has great sound, great props and great story. It has William Fitchner, the gem of a human that he is. Also recast Maggie Gyllenhaal instead of Katie Holmes, big upgrade. Do I know how he got those scars? No, I don’t, but god dammit was he amazing.
1.) Should really come as no surprise to people who know me, it’s 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Chris Evans comes back as Steve Rogers and this movie is amazing. Has another dream woman…. Two of them, in Scarlett Johansson and Emily VanCamp (from Canada), this movie is great because it’s a super hero movie, but also a very solid espionage movie that has a lot of spy elements. It’s in my top ten of all time, so it makes sense to be here.
I think, what this is telling me, is that I have a man crush on Chris Evans. That ALSO shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, I’ve loved him since he was Jake Wyler in Not Another Teen Movie. But it’s also a fun list of a lot of very good movies. Maybe it gave you one you hadn’t seen before, maybe it reminded you of one you hadn’t seen in a while, who knows. As long as it sparks conversation on movies, that’s all that this guys wants.
